The team at Bichon world have been a life saver. Recently work has been quite hectic, and it was such a relief to find a great team who took care of my dog when I was away. My dog, Jack enjoys being dropped off at the centre, and I can work peacefully knowing that my dog is safe and happy.

Working dogs Part One: Airport Security

Today we will be talking about those cute dogs you see at the airport, not only are they cute they are actually doing an incredibly important job. We will be mainly talking about detector dogs! Detector dogs play a vital role in the fight against prohibited goods heading into the country and are without them we would be missing a very important layer of defence! They work in a variety of places including ports, airports, mail centres and freight facilities. Having them around is obviously a very bad thing for people trying to import banned things, working with them can be amazing!

Imagine every time you go to work you have a co-worker who is always incredibly happy to see you, Labradors are commonly used for the job and they are bred and trained for duty across the country. The dogs are able to screen large volumes of people and goods in a very time efficient manner, they are a great tool when used in combination with technical capabilities such as X-ray and trace particle detection. The reason labradors are used is mainly because of their stable temperament and their non-threatening appearance and energy.

The dogs are generally trained at the same time handlers are getting trained, they learn together which helps them learn a consistent sequence for searching mail, luggage, freight, vehicles, vessels, aircraft, premises and people. These amazing dogs are trained to detect narcotics, firearms, explosive, currency or tobacco in the beginning. This initial training isn’t the only training the dogs get, they can be brought back in to be retrained if required or even learn new skills! Dogs are great at all of this because they can easily distinguish between different odours, unlike us.

The dog may work with an individual handler for up to seven years! That is a nice long work partner, the bond they form is obviously very strong but at the end of the day the dog goes back to the kennels and the handler goes home. After a dog gets too old for the work environment it may even end up going to live with the handler full time, sometimes they go back to the house they were bred at. Either way, the dogs lead a very happy and fulfilling life.

These dogs are an essential part of keeping our country safe. God bless them.

Can my dog eat this? This is a list of human foods dogs can consume!

We fret over a lot over the food we eat – which food makes use drool or even that which we hate! We are also extremely mindful of the allergies we have to particular foods. But, hold on! Who will do all this thinking for your darling dog? While we know dogs are quite intelligent, food is one department where they don’t think at all! They’ll swallow everything you place in front of them. So be careful, because not all foods that are fit for human consumption are canine – friendly. Some foods which you can gleefully savour can even prove fatal to your dog. And he’s your precious one, right? So we have come up with a list of dog and human-friendly foods, which both you and your buddy can enjoy together!

Green Peas:
Big yes! Not only because they are for your dog, but also because he loves them! Boil them, mash them, serve them raw – he’s going to love it anyways! But make sure the peas are fresh and not canned ones. Canned peas contain a lot of salt used for preservation, and this salt can be harmful to your dog. So fresh peas, yay!

Lean meat:
Any lean meat will do, but ensure it is cooked and it’s all flesh and no bones. Meat that’s appropriately cooked is exceptionally healthy for your dog because he needs his share of protein too, right? Again, keep a tab on the salt content. And do not add garlic to the meat you cook. Garlic can prove to be fatal for your dog.

Berries:
Fresh or frozen, they’re a great treat to your furry friend! Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries – they are full of antioxidants and dogs gorge on these! Most of them love the frozen version. So open up a can and start munching – together!

Apples:
An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Make sure this gets into your dog’s head by including apple in his diet. Make sure the apples are seedless to prevent choking. Otherwise, apples contain cyanide which is excellent for your dog’s health.

Carrots:
Literally, follow the carrot-and-stick-policy! Carrots are low on calories and will provide all the required fibres to your dog. And vegetables cooked in any form are great. We know that too, right? So make sure you serve generous helpings to your dog (And yourself, too!)

Cheese:
Cheese lovers, here’s some excellent news! You can feed your dog cheese every day – only if he’s not lactose intolerant though. But keep the quantity on the lower side to prevent him from putting on too much weight.

Beagle-Woman-and-Cheese

Bananas, pumpkins and sweet potatoes:
All of these are great to keep the digestive tract of your dog healthy. Plus, each one is a storehouse of many minerals and nutrients, so make sure you include them in your dog’s diet.

Rice and pasta:
Get innovative and dole out rice and pasta in different forms! You can combine it with lean meat, cheese, veggies and whip out some great stuff! Your dog will love these!

So go ahead and plan a systematic diet plan for your pooch. Make sure you take in recommendations from the vet too.

Dog friendly restaurants:

For a special treat you can even take your dog out to a dog friendly restaurant. We even know of a limousine company that will arrange a VIP ride in a luxury limousine to make the night special. Take your friends and there dog out for a meal in a limo and enjoy a great night with your dog. Yes, dogs are entitled to a little luxury as well. This limo company will take dogs.

How to take care of a dog?

dog_pampering

Dogs are adorable. But so are people who keep dogs as pets and tend to them. Because taking care of a dog is no child’s play! You have to take care of your furry friend just like you would tend to your child. So if you’re planning to get a pup home, you have to be prepared for the commitment too. But don’t worry, we have a few tips that will help you understand how to take care of them:

Find a reliable vet:
This is the first step you should be taking. Your dog needs a good doctor, one whom you can rush to in case of any emergencies. Make sure you test your vet on the basis of their knowledge and the way he/she interact with your dog.

Keep ample of water within his reach:
Dogs keep running around and then get exhausted and dehydrated. Ensure they have their own big bowl of water, from which they can lap up as much as they want and quench their thirst. And keep refilling the container at all times.

Vaccinate him:
You should vaccinate your dog even before you get him home. And even after that, don’t miss the vaccination schedule and ensure he gets his protection against probable diseases.

Feed him properly:
You need to include all kinds of food in your dog’s diet to make sure he gets all the required nutrients to keep him healthy. Talk to your vet and formulate a diet plan for your dog and stick to it. And ensure you don’t give him a lot of treats. And exercise control so that his weight remains under control.

Keep him and his environment:
Dogs are prone to ticks and all kinds of skin infections. So always keep them clean. If he stepped into a puddle on his walk, make sure you clean his paws the moment you get home. Also, bathe him regularly and brush his fur to keep him off ticks.

Groom him well:
Apart from their hair, your dog’s nails and teeth need attention too. Trim the nails often and keep his teeth clean at all times. The breaking of over-grown nails can be really painful for your dog, so take special care.

Get him to follow commands and exercise:
You need to keep communicating with your dog to make sure he understands everything you say. Come up with innovative games to make him prompt and agile. Also, even if he has a lazy day, take him out for his walk as usual. Exercise is essential to keep your dog fit and healthy.

Consider inserting an ID chip:
In case your dog gets left behind somewhere accidentally, you don’t want to become miserable because you aren’t able to find him. Inserting a chip in your dog can help you track him in case he gets lost.

Opt for birth control:
If breeding is not your reason to get a pet, get him neutralised. And in case of breeding, talk to the vet and get his opinion about the consequences. Dogs are susceptible to many kinds of infections and cancers, so get to know all the details from vets. Make an informed decision weighing the pros and cons.

Fun tip: Give him a whacky name!
This will need you to give some serious thought even before getting your pup home! Give him a lovely and unique name!

A pet is like an additional member in your family, so make sure you take care of it in that way. And though animals are expressive, they cannot speak. So make sure you take care of all their needs.
